Almost Ready to Go

I have been scanning artist trading cards as they have arrived for the 6 Degrees Pocket Change event. As I have mentioned before there are packages arriving from around the world. American participants send a stamped self addressed envelope with their cards, but the international group send ephemera from their home countries. It has been a delight to see what has arrived from Australia, Canada, Italy, India, New Zealand. The papers, stamps, images, old magazines, ribbons, fabrics, I could go on and on.

Meanwhile I have continued to create my own cards.

Joy

This card has a double meaning for me as Joy is my mother’s name as well as one of the most wonderful words created.

On the back of an ATC artists put their contact information and often the title of the little piece. I needed a way to display this information.  So I looked at my business cards, they are sorely out of date lacking the address of my new blog and no mention of my Beth Rommel Studio facebook page. (You are invited to go to that page and if you want you are welcome to “like” it. Is that shameless commerce or what?) So I created a new card for that purpose.

Maybe you will be receiving one of these in the mail. Actually any of the ATCs contributed will delight you. The love and goodwill sent to my door is a beautiful reflection on the true meaning of pocket change, a little something to make a positive change. They are almost ready to go.

Here they Come!

The Artist Trading Cards have begun to arrive at my door. Beside coming from all over the United States, they are arriving from New Zealand, Australia, and Canada. More to arrive from other countries on the other side of the ocean. I will tell you about those as they arrive.

For now I will continue to post some of my own.

Life is a Special Occasion

This is a combination of my image the “Stoyteller” based on the Southwestern American Indian dolls with the same name and a tagline from a Hallmark greeting card advertisement.

Friendship

Some verbage from a beautiful calendar called Flowers of Friendship given to me by my friend MaryBeth. One of the birds is from a painting I did several years ago. My family was out of town and I was really missing them, hence the broken heart.

I was actually out of town last week. In Houston. The Portrait of Spain show from the Prado was at the Museum of Fine Arts so I used the opportunity to spend some time with my  mother as she used to do with us. Looking at the art treasures. This little card is a reminder of that outing.

Familiarity Does Not Breed Contempt

I have been working on my Artist Trading Cards (ATCs), trying to find a rhythm.

Breathe
Breathe

Once I decided to rely on  images of my own creating I found what I was looking for.

You may recognize the figure above. She was in a post from May 18, 2009. I had painted a large canvas called Family, Love, Life.  It was a woman juggling all of the aspects of her life. I had postcards made of the 24″ x 36″ painting.  I cut up one of these postcards, collaged her with some other materials and now here she is on an ATC.

Bless Your Heart
Bless Your Heart

This lady now lives in California, but I have postcards with her image on them as well. So with the fun polka dot paper from my friend Hannah and a heart from another card I had illustrated we are transported to a southern mode with “Bless Your Heart”. She was featured in a post on February 17, 2011.

Float

This  collage is a combination of an image from one of my postcards with a piece of a retired oil painting and some beautiful Japanese tissue paper. You may remember this little fellow from a November 28, 2011 post.

The familiarity of the images made me comfortable with this new tiny scale artwork. Maybe it is a direction to explore with my large paintings too, inserting my niftyartgirl figures into the more serious oil paintings. Hmmm, I am feeling inspired.

Last Day to Register

Don’t forget to register today for the Pocket Change Artist Trading Card Exchange. This exchange is a lovely coming together of the art, the illustration  and the art therapy communities. The postman has already delivered packages with artwork from two countries.

Reach to Grow
Reach to Grow

I have begun working on some cards for this project. It has been so much fun that creating four a week for the year has become one of my art goals for 2013.

The first and last of these ATCs are pieces removed from an oil painting, I added a little white ink with the help of some stencils.

These cards are only 3.5″ x 2.5″. Truly a little pocket change. Hope you will join us.
